Traumatic Brain Injury Victim: “I Miss My Memory”

Blogger Amy Zellmer had an amazing memory until one fateful morning, when she slipped on a patch of ice and hit her head on the ground below. The back of her skull absorbed the full force of the fall, and Zellmer suffered numerous injuries, including a TBI (traumatic brain injury).

“I had no idea the journey I was about to begin, and the struggles I would endure,” she writes in a new column for The Huffington Post.

Though Zellmer’s TBI was considered a relatively mild one, the affects have been long-lasting. Even after the initial damage, she continues to struggle with her memory on a daily basis.

“I am now the post-it note queen,” she says.

Of course, many TBI victims endure even more crippling impairments, and recovery can take a very long time. Some patients may never achieve a total “return to normal.”

“No two TBIs are the same,” Zellmer astutely notes. All of them are serious, though, and even mild TBIs like hers can utterly redefine your life experience.
